The Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) has expanded the Infrastrukturatlas (ISA) with a new additional map showing future mobile network coverage. The aim is to provide municipalities and planning authorities with better information on the planned expansion of mobile networks in Germany.
The Federal Network Agency regularly checks whether mobile network operators comply with their legal and licensing obligations regarding coverage of areas and populations. In addition, it supports regional mobile network expansion projects – particularly in underserved rural areas. The Infrastrukturatlas provides essential geoinformation for these tasks.
With the new Mobile Network Forecast map, municipalities can see in which areas, currently lacking 4G, or 5G coverage, a mobile network operator plans to expand its network within twelve months from the start of the respective survey (§ 81 TKG). The survey also provides site coordinates or search areas as well as information on the expected network coverage. The focus is on 4G and 5G technologies.
The planned coverage of the major mobile network operators is displayed nationwide in 100 x 100 meter tiles, separated by technology and operator. In addition to the network forecast, the Infrastrukturatlas continues to provide information on existing mobile network sites, search areas, and coverage deficits, showing where adequate coverage is currently lacking.
Furthermore, the mobile network forecast map layers can be made available via a Web Map Service (WMS) for integration into external geographic information systems and online mapping applications.
Access to this information is restricted to municipalities and is intended for general planning and promotion purposes in mobile network expansion.
